Amazon is initiating another round of layoffs, affecting a limited number of positions within its communications department. This action is part of the company’s ongoing strategy to streamline operations and reduce expenses. The decision aligns with Amazon’s broader objective to minimize bureaucracy and enhance operational efficiency, enabling teams to respond more swiftly and connect more effectively with customers.
Brad Glasser, a spokesperson for Amazon, confirmed this development to Bloomberg, noting that a recent evaluation of the Communications and Corporate Responsibility organization prompted the changes, including the reduction of certain roles.
“These decisions are never easy,” Glasser remarked, “but they are essential for us to enhance our speed, foster ownership, and reinforce our culture while bringing our teams closer to customers. We are dedicated to providing support to the employees impacted during this transition.”
These layoffs occur as CEO Andy Jassy continues to reshape the organization since his appointment in 2021. Following the transition from founder Jeff Bezos, Jassy has overseen multiple job reductions and has scaled back several ambitious initiatives that no longer fit within Amazon’s primary business focus. This has resulted in thousands of job cuts as part of a comprehensive effort to streamline operations.
Amazon fires more employees, says layoffs will help company move faster
In 2022, Amazon experienced its most significant wave of job reductions, impacting 27,000 corporate positions across various departments. Since then, the company has executed smaller, targeted layoffs aimed at specific teams and areas that necessitate downsizing. The communications department has recently been affected as Amazon seeks to identify further cost-cutting measures and enhance operational efficiency.
Alongside these layoffs, Amazon has instituted a return-to-office policy for its corporate workforce, mandating in-office attendance five days a week. This policy has been perceived by many as a strategy to prompt voluntary departures; however, Jassy clarified that the intention is to reinforce Amazon’s corporate culture.
In September, Jassy also instructed executives to reorganize their business units by the end of March, with an emphasis on decreasing the ratio of managers to individual contributors. This initiative aims to streamline the management hierarchy, expedite decision-making processes, and ensure that teams can respond more swiftly to customer demands.
Although the recent layoffs may cause apprehension among employees, Amazon has reiterated its commitment to supporting those affected during the transition. While the company has not disclosed the precise number of employees impacted, it has emphasized that assistance will be provided to those who are losing their positions.
