Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster, who shared the stage in the 2022 Broadway production of The Music Man, have publicly acknowledged their romantic involvement following their respective separations from their spouses, Deborra-Lee Furness and Ted Griffin.
A new chapter in romance is unfolding.
Sutton Foster and Hugh Jackman, whose on-stage chemistry in The Music Man enchanted audiences, have confirmed their relationship after months of speculation regarding their connection.
On January 6, the couple was seen together in Santa Monica, California, enjoying a dinner date, as captured in photographs obtained by People. Jackman opted for a casual look, wearing white trousers, a grey t-shirt, and a black zip-up jacket, while Foster made a striking appearance in a green gown complemented by a camel coat.
Since the beginning of 2023, both performers have experienced significant personal transitions. Hugh announced his separation from his wife of nearly 30 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, in September 2023, while Sutton, aged 49, filed for divorce from her husband of a decade, Ted Griffin, in October of the following year.
In addition to their newfound single status, much of the speculation surrounding the romantic nature of Hugh and Sutton’s relationship stemmed from the strong connection they developed during their collaboration on the 2022 revival of The Music Man. Leading up to the confirmation of their relationship, numerous heartwarming moments from their interviews began to resurface.
Consider Sutton’s remarks regarding the actor known for his role as Wolverine, as they both took on the leading roles of Marian and Harold in The Music Man.
“He possesses an impeccable reputation for being the hardest working individual, remarkably kind, and generous—and all of that is indeed accurate,” Sutton, who has a 7-year-old daughter named Emily with Ted, stated in an interview with Vogue in 2022. “He has unexpectedly become one of my closest friends, which was a surprise, as one typically enters such collaborations hoping for a harmonious relationship. However, we recently spent Memorial Day together with our families. It is truly enjoyable to forge new friendships after the age of 40.”
She also commented on their onstage chemistry, which at times led audience members to perceive the actors as breaking character.
“One of the initial points our director made was that when observing two characters falling in love, one should look for the moments that make them smile,” the Tony Award winner elaborated. “This concept emerged from that idea, resulting in spontaneous moments that vary each night. It blurs the line between Harold and Marian, or Hugh and Sutton.”
Hugh, for his part, has openly expressed his long-standing admiration for Sutton and her performances.
During a joint appearance with Sutton on Late Night in 2022, the 56-year-old enthusiastically shared with Seth Meyers, “I saw her perform in Thoroughly Modern Millie when she was about 4 years old. I have followed her career closely. It’s truly remarkable.”
Sutton, who was formerly married to Christian Borle, and her estranged spouse Ted have remained silent regarding their separation.
In contrast, Hugh and Deborra-Lee publicly announced their split in September 2023, emphasizing that their family, which includes children Oscar, 24, and Ava, 19, continues to be their main focus.
In a joint statement to People on September 15, the couple expressed, “We have been fortunate to share nearly three decades together as husband and wife in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey is now evolving, and we have chosen to separate in order to pursue our individual growth.”
Additionally, in May 2023, Deborra-Lee, 69, shared insights on her experience as a newly single individual.
“I have discovered that I am strong and resilient,” she remarked to People during a New York screening of Force of Nature: The Dry 2. “And that I—we are all in a state of constant evolution.”
