Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in the United States on Wednesday (local time) for a two-day engagement. This visit is made at the invitation of US President Donald Trump. Upon arrival, PM Modi was greeted at the airport by India’s Ambassador to the US, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, along with other officials. This marks PM Modi’s inaugural visit to the United States since President Trump began his second term. During this trip, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with President Trump.
Members of the Indian community have assembled outside Blair House to extend a warm welcome to Prime Minister Modi. Despite the severe winter conditions, they have gathered to show their support.
In an interview with ANI, Baburaj, a representative of the Indian diaspora, expressed, “I reside in Virginia and hail from Telangana. The excitement among the Indian diaspora today is palpable.”
Srinivas, another member of the Indian community, conveyed that there is a shared enthusiasm regarding the United States’ decision to accord “highest priority” to Prime Minister Modi. “We, the Indian-American diaspora, are all present here to greet Prime Minister Modi. Our excitement stems from the fact that the US has prioritized our Prime Minister, who represents a population of 1.4 billion,” he stated to ANI.
An overview of PM Modi’s US agenda
During his visit, PM Modi will engage in discussions concerning trade, strategic defense collaboration, and global security issues with the newly-elected President Trump. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that this visit “demonstrates the importance of the India-US partnership and reflects the bipartisan backing that this relationship enjoys in the United States.”
He noted that it presents a “valuable opportunity” to engage with the new administration on various areas of mutual interest.
PM Modi’s agenda includes bilateral discussions with President Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats. The Prime Minister is also anticipated to meet with senior US officials and interact with prominent business leaders and members of the Indian diaspora. Additionally, he is likely to have a meeting with Tesla CEO and DOGE head Elon Musk.
“The two nations share a clear convergence of interests across multiple domains – including trade, investment, technology, defense cooperation, counterterrorism, Indo-Pacific security, and, importantly, people-to-people relations,” the foreign secretary stated.
