Presenting the electric vehicle pickup supported by Bezos, designed for the general public. Priced at $25,000, this affordable EV comes in a single form factor and color, targeting everyday Americans while promoting a do-it-yourself ethos through a wide range of aftermarket enhancements.
This is the guiding principle for Slate, a newly established American electric vehicle company that has just unveiled its inaugural model, supported by former Amazon executives, including reportedly the family office of Jeff Bezos.
Slate claims that its electric vehicle pickup—a minimalist truck with dimensions smaller than a Ford Maverick—will be priced in the mid-$20,000 range and will be available in any color of your choice, provided it is slate grey. The vehicle, which offers limited options, provides a selection between two battery sizes for the rear-wheel-drive model: a 52.7-kWh battery pack designed for a range of 150 miles and an 84.3-kWh pack capable of achieving 240 miles of range.
The Michigan-based company plans to provide an extensive array of custom components, vinyl coverings, and even an option for a roof to convert it into an SUV, should the customer wish. This is where the concept of ‘make it’ comes into play, as customers will have the opportunity to install these features themselves.
Customers may also opt not to utilize these options and instead choose a more economical, functional pickup. ‘The automotive industry has neglected the working class in America.
What is particularly exciting and distinctive about Slate is our commitment to manufacturing vehicles for working-class Americans, right here in America,’ stated Jeremy Snyder, Slate’s chief commercial officer, in an interview with Yahoo Finance. ‘This is something that has been overlooked.’
The founders of Slate, Jeff Wilke, a former CEO of Amazon Consumer, and his MIT classmate Miles Arnone, sought to create a vehicle that would provide affordable, dependable, and efficient transportation for American workers across various sectors.
As noted by TechCrunch, several former Amazon executives are associated with Slate, along with a significant investor: Jeff Bezos, the chairman of Amazon. Through his family office, Bezos is said to possess a passive investment and is not actively engaged in the daily operations of the company. Snyder mentioned that Slate would refrain from commenting on Bezos’s involvement.
